My mother was an avid gardener, when she had the time outside of looking after four kids. I also fondly remember many weekends being woken by my dad before the sun came up to go fishing. However, it wasn’t until adulthood that I ‘discovered’ hunting for food as a way of life. It felt like an “ah-ha” moment for me, and I knew straight away that this was how I was meant to live. If anything, I carry a lot of regret having not started hunting earlier. This regret fuels me every day and inspires me to help others find their life’s passion too.

Growing, catching and hunting food for his family
Rob is a passionate outdoorsman living in the Bega Valley in NSW, Australia. In his spare time, you will find Rob actively participating in nature by growing, catching and hunting food for his family.
A love of reading and a passion for the outdoors.
Rob loves books and reading to his children but noticed that his way of life was under-represented in children’s literature. This inspired him to become an author himself.
Rob enjoys channelling his creative energy into sharing his passion for the outdoors with others.
His writing encourages a deeper understanding and respect for the natural world and inspires us all to take some control over where our food comes from.
Challenging topics written in a unique style.
Rob’s writing blends poetry, comedy, action and emotion, with the goal of eliciting a strong response in the reader. He writes with restraint, but isn’t afraid to tackle challenging topics, like hunting. He also tries very hard to be funny and is often referred to as the Bill Bryson of outdoor literature by anyone he can pay enough to say this.
Rob is a regular contributor to outdoor magazines, such as Australian Deer, and is known as The Venison Diplomat on social media.

Why it matters to me?
Why do you write about the outdoors?
Outside of my family and friends, the outdoors in the thing I am most passionate about. I love hunting, fishing, foraging and growing my own food. I am not great at any one of these things, but there isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t think about or actively engage in nature. I write about it because I love it, and I want to encourage others to express what they are passionate about too.
What is your aim with your books?
I want my readers to tap into the wild within them. I want them to know that it is normal and natural to hunt, fish, forage and grow your own food, and in fact it is good for you and the environment to do so. I aim to pull the curtain back on outdoor culture with my writing, by being honest and entertaining. But most of all, I write because I like to write, and it will be a happy side-effect if people enjoy reading my work too.
How do you view our relationship with nature?
I feel that society has been retreating from a life lived closer to the land for some time, including me. We are at risk of losing sight of the critical role humans play in nature. From the moment we are born we take from the environment, but we can have some control of how much of what and from where. I want my writing to challenge each of us to consider our role and encourage us to think before we eat. I think this quote from Aldo Leopold sums it up for me; “We abuse land because we regard it as a commodity belonging to us. When we see land as a community to which we belong, we may begin to use it with love and respect.” We all belong.
