Why it matters to me?

How did you get into hunting, fishing, foraging, and growing food?

My mother was an avid gardener, when she had the time outside of looking after four kids. I also fondly remember many weekends being woken by my dad before the sun came up to go fishing. However, it wasn’t until adulthood that I ‘discovered’ hunting for food as a way of life. It felt like an “ah-ha” moment for me, and I knew straight away that this was how I was meant to live. If anything, I carry a lot of regret having not started hunting earlier. This regret fuels me every day and inspires me to help others find their life’s passion too.

Why do you write about the outdoors?

Outside of my family and friends, the outdoors in the thing I am most passionate about. I love hunting, fishing, foraging and growing my own food. I am not great at any one of these things, but there isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t think about or actively engage in nature. I write about it because I love it, and I want to encourage others to express what they are passionate about too.

What is your aim with your books?

I want my readers to tap into the wild within them. I want them to know that it is normal and natural to hunt, fish, forage and grow your own food, and in fact it is good for you and the environment to do so. I aim to pull the curtain back on outdoor culture with my writing, by being honest and entertaining. But most of all, I write because I like to write, and it will be a happy side-effect if people enjoy reading my work too.

How do you view our relationship with nature?

I feel that society has been retreating from a life lived closer to the land for some time, including me. We are at risk of losing sight of the critical role humans play in nature. From the moment we are born we take from the environment, but we can have some control of how much of what and from where. I want my writing to challenge each of us to consider our role and encourage us to think before we eat. I think this quote from Aldo Leopold sums it up for me; “We abuse land because we regard it as a commodity belonging to us. When we see land as a community to which we belong, we may begin to use it with love and respect.” We all belong.
